ROME Season 1 Episode 9 (HBO TV Series 2005)



The ninth episode of the first season of “Rome” opens with Cato and Scipio appearing bloodied and beaten after the Battle of Thapsus. Scipio tries to get Cato, who is sitting on the ground, to leave in a hurry. After some resistance from Cato, they decide to go to Utica. The tow arrive in Utica and walk into a dark and dingy house. They eat dinner there and over the course of the meal Scipio tries to get Cato to join him in drinking. Cato suggests that Scipio go make peace with Caesar. Cato then takes the knife he had earlier asked for under the pretense of cutting stale bread, pretends to be going to the bathroom, and commits suicide. The next scene is of Cato’s funeral pyre. Soldiers and Scipio stand around for a bit until Scipio has his aide Aquinas kill him there.

The scene opens with the Brutus returning home for the first time since he left Rome to join Pompey’s forces against Caesar. His mother Servilia comes out to meet him, but her silent greeting comes off as cold and leaves one wondering if her son’s safe return from battle has any emotional impact upon her. As quickly as she enters, she exits again leaving Brutus as confused as the audience. Meanwhile, in the Forum it is announced to the public that Caesar has defeated Pompey in a decisive battle and that the traitor Pompey, as he is labeled by the announcer, has fled to Egypt with Caesar in pursuit. The return of prominent Pompeians, most of whom are future conspirators, is also announced with an admonition that they not be harmed under Caesar’s merciful protection.rmed under Caesar’s merciful protection.

The second episode of the first season of “Rome” opens with Caesar at his camp at Ravenna discussing troop desertions and loyalties with Posca. Posca warns him that he is in a very precarious position, the men may not follow him to Rome. When Posca asks Caesar what happens to them in January when his proconsulship expires, Caesar snaps back about a slave not understanding the subtleties of troop motivation. Posca questions a receipt for 500,000 and is shocked that it was spent on the Antony for tribune campaign. Posca questions Antony’s suitability for so sacred and dignified an office.the benefit of having Mark Antony in the position of people’s tribune. The purpose of a people’s tribune was to uphold the rights of the plebians and to have veto power over motions proposed by the Senate. Since Caesar will soon have to give up his command and return to the city for trial, he resolves to use Antony and his veto power in the senate.
